Jón Gardar has twenty years experience in advisory and international management

Jón Gardar Gudmundsson is the founder and managing director of Nordic Mar. He has over 20 years’ experience in the finance, management consulting and seafood industries in Europe, North and South America and Asia.

Before founding Nordic Mar in 2015, Jón Gardar was deputy CEO at Icelandic Group – Iceland‘s 4th largest company and its leading seafood exporter. At Icelandic Group, he led the company’s business development and ran its operations in Iceland, which included processing, harvesting, quality assurance and logistics units.

Previous roles include Senior Advisor with Glacier Securities, a New York-based financial advisory firm specializing in the Seafood Industry, a subsidiary of Islandsbanki hf. (successor of Iceland’s Glitnir Bank). He was also Partner at Capacent Glacier, a Reykjavik based financial consulting company and from 2003-2008 a member of Glitnir Banks’ seafood team and the Managing Director for the International region at Glitnir Bank, where he oversaw the banks operations in Asia and Latin America, including representative offices in Shanghai, Lima and Santiago.

Jón Gardar started his career in the financial management, working for 8 years as CFO, first at Icelands’ third largest consulting company, VSO Consulting and then at Icelandic Iberica S.A. in Barcelona, Spain where he managed a team of ten professionals in accounting, finance, IT and logistics.

Jón Gardar originated and led a number of successful corporate advisory transactions during his time at Glitnir Bank and Glacier Securities. These included Copeinca’s USD 230m private placement and listing on the Oslo Stock Exchange, the USD 134m private placement and listing of Camposol in Oslo, the sale of Salmones Cupquelan to Cooke Aquaculture and the sale of the salmon assets of Congelados Pacifico in Chile to the German owned Ventisqueros. 

He has also led many high profile lending transactions, such as the working capital financing of Europacifico, Spain – a company owned by leading seafood companies in three continents; Nissui of Japan, Friosur of Chile and Sealord of New Zealand. Jon Gardar also led the bridge financing of Aquachiles’ acquisition of Aguas Claras in Chile and the acquisition financing of Camposol on behalf of DC Holding in Peru.

Jón Gardar served on the board of Bakkavör China on behalf of Glitnir Bank, and on the boards of Icelandic Iberica (Spain) and Icelandic Gadus (Belgium) on behalf of Icelandic Group. He has held a number of presentations on strategy and seafood, including at the Icelandic-American Chamber of Commerce in New York and the Seafood conference in Wellington, New Zealand.

Jón Gardar Gudmundsson holds a Cand Oceon. degree in Business Administration from the University of Iceland and a MBA degree from IESE Business School, Barcelona, Spain. He is a fluent English, Spanish and Icelandic speaker, and has basic proficiency in the Scandinavian languages. He is married, with two children and lives in Reykjavík, Iceland.

Gudjon Steinar Sverrisson

Gudjon Steinar Sverrisson joined Nordic Mar in July of 2018.  Financial executive with over 25 years of successful global experience in the Europe, USA and Latin America. Fluent in English, Spanish and Icelandic. Creative, analytical and detail oriented, able to identify and implement process improvements that increase accuracy, consistency and efficiency. Principal areas of practice have focused on financial management and accounting, with in depth knowledge of financial Systems (ERP), Credit management, M&A and Integration.

Before joining Nordic Mar, Gudjon worked as an Interim CFO and a finance and operational consultant for 10 years, including 2 years when he served as a full time CFO for a reseller of satellite bandwidth and teleport operator, to lead the company’s M&A activities and later successfully merge with one of its global competitors. Other clients included an online supermarket with home delivery, mobile phone distributor and E-retailer, a farm producing organic vegetables, South Florida’s largest distributor of Hispanic food and beverages, Kitchen cabinet manufacturer, Import/Export companies and a Microsoft Dynamics Navision Solution center.

Previous roles include senior manager position with Glitnir Capital Corporation in New York from 2007 to 2008, where he managed the bank’s credit portfolio for Latin America worth over $220 million and successfully analyzed and gained the approval to finance a client’s acquisition of one of Peru’s largest exporter of agriculture products.

Prior to that, Gudjon served for 7 years as Vice President of Finance and Group Controller for STRAX in Miami, Florida.  A supplier of products and value-added services in the mobile phone and mobile phone accessory market. He oversaw daily operations of 40+ employees, with 5 direct reports. During his time he negotiated an increase of the company’s bank credit facility from $50,000 to $7.5 million, allowing the company to grow its sales 10 times to $80+ million.

Before moving to South Florida, Gudjon established a pioneering company in Guayaquil, Ecuador, where he served as Managing Director for 3 years.  The company was formed to introduce European technology to the seafood/food industry in Ecuador. Representing several companies from Iceland, Denmark and Italy, including Marel, Vaki, Carnitech, Borgarplast, Vikan and TTS.  Gudjon was also contracted by the Trade Council of Iceland to serve as a Foreign Trade Representative to promote Icelandic companies and products in Ecuador.

Gudjon Steinar Sverrisson holds a Cand Oceon. degree in Business Administration from the University of Iceland and a MBA degree from THUNDERBIRD, School of Global Management, Glendale, AZ, USA. He is married, with four children and divides his time between Miami, Florida and Reykjavik, Iceland.
